The Silkie guinea pig, known as the Sheltie in England, is a relatively new breed, first appearing in the 1970s. Originating in the United Kingdom, they are believed to be the result of breeding between a Peruvian and a "Self Black" guinea pig.
A distinguishing feature of the Silkie is its long, flowing hair, reminiscent of the Peruvian. However, unlike the Peruvian, the Silkie lacks the frontal sweep of hair that covers the face. Instead, the hair elegantly sweeps back from the head, creating a mane-like appearance, without a part down the back.
When viewed from above, the Silkie's body shape is tear-shaped, a consequence of its wide body and proportionally smaller head. The fur itself is soft, fine, and possesses a noticeable shine. A rarer variation, the Silkie Satin, exhibits the same general appearance but boasts a coat with a glossy sheen and a texture similar to satin.
