On January 15, 1919, a catastrophe took place in Boston that would become infamously known as the Great Molasses Flood. Though often overshadowed by more prominent disasters, this event reveals a blend of industrial negligence, community resilience, and the unforeseen consequences of rapid urbanization. While the flood resulted in significant loss of life, it could have been even more disastrous had certain circumstances aligned differently.

The disaster unfolded when a massive storage tank, owned by the Purity Distilling Company, forgotten events burst open, releasing an estimated 2.3 million gallons of molasses into the streets of the North End. The viscous wave, moving at a speed of 35 miles per hour, devastated everything in its path. Buildings were swept off their foundations, horses were drowned, and debris blanketed the area in a sticky brown substance.
